Arlene E. (Johnston) Shumaker

October 7, 1937 — September 8, 2015

Arlene Elizabeth Shumaker, aged 77, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ early in the morning on Tuesday September 8, 2015. Arlene was born October 7, 1937, in Coshocton, the daughter of the late Ralph F. and Isabel B (Foote) Johnston. She was a 1955 graduate of Jefferson High School in Dresden, OH and a 1959 graduate of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Zanesville, OH. During her long career as a registered nurse, she worked at several facilities. Beside Good Samaritan Hospital, she was employed at West Lafayette Care Center, Coshocton Care Center and Coshocton Memorial Hospital. On March 21, 1959, Arlene was married to Crayton E. Shumaker. Among the hobbies that the Shumakers shared was woodworking. Crayton would build the pieces, and Arlene would stain and seal them. One of their passions was to bless local churches with the fruit of their talents. Throughout Muskingum County there are several places of worship that contain contributions from the Shumakers ranging from pulpits to welcome centers. For a short period of time, Arlene managed Shumaker's Furniture Clinic in Dresden with the help of her husband and her youngest son, Barry. In her free time, Arlene enjoyed fishing. She was also an avid sports fan, faithfully following the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers and of course her favorite The Ohio State Buckeye football team. In fact she enjoyed her last evening on this earth watching the Buckeyes beat Virginia Tech on Labor Day. Besides her husband of 56 years, Crayton Shumaker, she is survived by her five sons, James C. (Sally) Shumaker, Kent D. (Kimberly) Shumaker, Michael A. (Kathryn) Shumaker, Mitchell B. (Tammy) Shumaker and Barry R. (Jennifer) Shumaker; seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother Dr. Kent (Mary Ann) Johnston; and four sisters, Constance (Raymond) Copeland, Sue Lawler, Nancy (Edwin) Cochran and Marcia (John) Trakas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Melissa Shumaker; and brother-in-law James Lawler. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 P.M. & 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, September 11, 2015, at North Terrace Church of Christ, 1420 Brandywine Blvd, Zanesville, and one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2015, with Mr. William Meaige officiating.
