Austin V. Young, 79, of Newark, formerly of Zanesville was called home by God to prepare a place in Heaven for his family and friends Thursday, August 18, 2005, at his home. His love and counsel will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years Bernadine O. (Harbin); his sister, Lucille (David) Mitchell of St. Clairsville; his children, Judy (Curtis) Thompson of Seattle, WA; Austin G. (Deborah) Young of Copley; Wayne A. (Kimberly S.) Young of Newark; David A. (Robin) Young of Merriam, KS; his grandchildren, John Bradley III, Daniel Thompson, Deborah, Gregory, Gwendolyn, Natalie, Wyatt, Matthew, Nicholas, Steven, and Sara Young and seven great grandchildren, a special mention for Roger and Carol Bissell. He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Arlie Young and by his sister Jewel (Albert) Bendetti. Austin enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. Some highlights of his career include awarded gold wings, graduated Ohio State B.S. 1956, graduated Armed Forces Staff College, Executive Officer VP31, Commanding Officer VP42, Executive Officer and Captain of USS Salisbury Sound AV13, Air Anti-Submarine Warfare Office Officer of Chief of Navel Operations, awarded the Vietnamese Medal of Honor, First Class, and Joint Service Commendation Medal. Upon retiring from the Navy in 1970, Austin became a gentleman farmer and active in a number of volunteer activities including Roseville Lions Club, St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Roseville, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of the Library, Genesis Bethesda Hospital and tutored adult non-readers. Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. & 5-7 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2005 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1271 Blue Avenue Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev Doris Flynn officiating.
