Bernard E. Sowers

Bernard E. Sowers, 75, of Zanesville, passed away at 2:07 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at Genesis Good Samaritan emergency room. He was born January 22, 1931, in Logan, Ohio, the son of the late Leonard and Mary Musick Sowers. He was a 1950 graduate of Roseville High School. He was retired from Burnham Corp. with over 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post #71 in Roseville and a member of the VFW Post #9090. He was a member of Norval Park Church of Christ. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sports activities and proud of their scholastic achievements. He is survived by his wife, JoAnne Bowers Sowers, of the home; two daughters, Susan (Dr. Michael) Whitaker and Sharon (Christopher) Flynn; a half-sister, Jennie (John) Simmons; three half-brothers, Rick, Leonard and James Paul Sowers and their mother, Frances Sowers; seven grandchildren, Heather (Gary) Carson, Dr. Andrew Whitaker, Nathan Whitaker, Lindsay (Justin) Rayner, Craig Flynn, Sean Flynn and Hayley Flynn; great-granddaughters, Sydney and Riley Carson; two sisters-in-law, Norma Sowers and Wanda Lou Longstreth and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma White and a brother, Benny Sowers. Memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2006 at Norval Park Church of Christ, 845 Arch St., Zanesville with Tim Gainer officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to services. VFW George Selsam Post #1058 will hold full military rites at the church. Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, entrusted with all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Norval Park Church of Christ, 845 Arch St., Zanesville, Ohio.
