Bernice L. Gillespie, 91, of Zanesville, died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Helen Purcell Home. She was born November 19, 1918, in Zanesville, the daughter of the late Wilbur and Ida Halsey Eckelberry. She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, lifetime member of the Pioneer and Historical Society and past member of the Thursday Music Club, the Soroptimist Club and Zanesville Civic League. She served as church organist and/or choir director at the United Brethern Church, Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church, Forest Avenue Presbyterian Church, Market Street Baptist Church and the College Drive Presbyterian Church in New Concord. She taught piano, organ and voice vocal for many years. Surviving are a son, Lee Gillespie of Zanesville; three cousins, Shirley (Monty) West, Lois Bost and Barbara Cravenor, all of Zanesville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Gillespie, who died August 24, 1996. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2010 at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
