Betty Acker

Betty Westcott Acker, 86 of Zanesville, died at 11:50 A.M. on Monday, August 7, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital, Newark. She was born December 11, 1930, in Chandlersville, a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Keyes Westcott. She graduated in 1949 from Zanesville High School with wonderful classmates and friendships that lasted through the years. She worked at Bettis Box Company, Timpkin Roller Bearings, and Cooper Industries over the years. She married Dwight Vandenbark in 1950 and had one daughter, Vicki Ellen. Betty volunteered as a group leader in the Camp Fire Girls Program for fourteen years. This was in Ohio, Alabama, Minnesota, and the Virginia/DC area where she was one of the first two volunteers at the national level. In Virginia she was awarded the Charlotte Joy Farnsworth Award for her organizational work. She belonged to the Jr. Bethesda League at Bethesda Hospital for thirty years. Their big project was filling the vending machines, and those profits supported various programs and provided the funds to build the First Care section of the old Big Bear building and other various projects in the hospital. Betty lost a good friend from Lancaster, Ohio and helped with her two daughters, Carol and Debbie Alley. This became a closeness that was never lost. In 1986, she became interested in the Society of Stukely Westcott Descendants of America and continued serving as President and Historian for the group, which became her passion. Her ancestors came to America in 1635 from England. This led to her being a member of the Daughters of the Revolution for many years. In Zanesville, she was awarded the Hometown Hero award for her efforts in collecting the second half of the funds to complete the WWII and Korean War Memorial on the Court House grounds. She also served on the board for the Senior Center in Zanesville. She is survived by a daughter, Vicki and her husband Peter Mathias, and a grandson, Mark Westcott Mathias; and daughter of Clarence Clink acker, Bonnie Acker Murray, and Bonnies son, Scott Bischoff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her third husband of thirty four years, Clarence Clink Acker, who died December 9, 2011. A Cremation-With-Care has taken place and a Memorial Service is planned for a later date.
