C. Trafford Dick, 88, of Zanesville, died at 7:45 A.M. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at his home. He was born August 18, 1927, in Lancaster, a son of the late Donald and Bernice Johnson Dick. He moved to Zanesville in the first grade and graduated from Lash High School, class of 1944. He was a graduate of Muskingum College in 1948 where he completed his degree in three years, and went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education Administration from The University of Michigan in 1954. Trafford served our country in the United States Navy for 3 years; 1 year at the end of World War II and 2 more years during the Koran Conflict where he served on a Navy Destroyer Collett DD 730. Trafford began his teaching career at Sheridan School in 1948. He had a short stint at Wilson Elementary. He taught at McIntire Elementary from 1954-1959. He became the Principal at McIntire and McKinley Schools in 1960. He became the Elementary Supervisor in 1966 and the Director of Elementary Programs in 1975. In 1978, he became the Assistant Superintendent and the Superintendent in 1980 until he retired December 31, 1984. Zanesville City Schools were his passion for 38 years. Trafford has also taught classes in education at Ohio University Lancaster, Ohio University Zanesville and Muskingum University. He was also Supervisor for student teachers at Ohio University and Muskingum University. He served 13 years as the Director of Foundations at Muskingum Area Technical College where he raised money for scholarships for the students at MATC (now Zane State). He taught swimming at the YMCA and did the Boy Scouts Awards for Swimming. He was also the manager of the swimming pool at the Zanesville Country Club. He was an organizer of the Biddy football program of Zanesville. He refereed for over thirty years in football and basketball. He also instructed referee classes for football and basketball. He was the Muskingum Valley League Commissioner from 1974-1984, a member of the Eastern District Athletic Board from 1974-1984, was a member of and Sunday School Teacher for the First Christian Church, board member and Chamber of the Board at Good Samaritan Hospital from 1973-1984, and was a Rotary Club Member from 1977-1985. He was also a member of the Shinnick Board of Directors and of the Genesis Hospital Community Board. Trafford received many honors throughout his life, including North-South All Star Official for Football in 1977, recognized for outstanding leadership and service to Zanesville City Schools 1948-1984, Honorary Degree of Associate of Public Awareness from Muskingum Area Technical College June 8, 1966, inducted into the Officials Hall of Fame in appreciation of his outstanding service to high school sports June 14, 1997, inducted into the Muskingum County Veterans Hall of Fame November 11, 1999, and received the Bob and Dolores Hope Award in 1984. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Bridwell Dick, whom he married October 8, 1952; his two children, Trafford Dick and Valencia (Terry) Clark; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Donald Leon and Vance Starling Dick; and a sister Alice Dick. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 P.M. & 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, and one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at First Christian Church, 3000 Dresden Road, Zanesville, with Rev. Dawn Remster officiating. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville, with military honors being presented by the United States Navy in conjunction with VFW George Selsam Post #1058 and American Legion Post #29. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zane State College Foundation in memory of C. Trafford Dick: 1555 Newark Road, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
