Carl Gerald Fisher passed away Monday, December 28, 2020 in the emergency room at Adena Regional Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio, he was 102 years old. Born April 21, 1918 at the family home near Gratiot, Ohio to the late Carl Watts Fisher and Ferol Marie (Ankrum) Fisher. His father was in WWI when Gerald was born. Gerald's wife Nancy Edith (Johnson) Fisher preceded him in death by just 4 days on December 24, 2020 they had been married 70 years.
As a member of the “Greatest Generation” Gerald entered the Army in June 1944, 12 years after graduating high school. He trained in Kentucky and shipped overseas to Germany in November. As a member of the 961 Field Artillery Unit he was deployed throughout Europe and Germany during 1944 and 1945 in pursuit of the enemy. As an ammunition Sargent NCO Gerald distinguished himself and was awarded the EAME (Europe, Africa, Middle Eastern) Ribbon, 2 Bronze Stars with 2 Battle Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Victory Medal for WWII.
Gerald worked on the family farm outside Gratiot but always had side jobs throughout his life. In the early days he hauled milk and sold ice blocks. He trucked limestone coal and sand, and later started his own excavating company when he purchased a bulldozer. He served as a township trustee and was a member and commander of the local American Legion. He enjoyed going to the State High School Boys Basketball Championship for over 50 years as well as the Little Brown Jug. He attended the Ohio State Fair every year, and local fairs throughout the year. He thoroughly enjoyed his morning breakfast club into his 90's. Gerald was a very social person and loved talking to children. He enjoyed a long and healthy life.
Surviving Gerald is daughter Marsha Breeden (Francis) and son Gary Fisher (Lynette). There is one granddaughter, Rebecca Edith Fisher and 4 grandsons: Adam (Nicole) Breeden, Brandon Dunn, Nicholas Breeden, and Evan Carl Bloss (Brooke Hill). Three great grandchildren: Brenden Breeden, Zoe Bloss, and Aria Bloss. Also surviving is one sister-in-law Dorothy Tom. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins on the Fisher and Johnson sides of the family.
Preceding him in death was his only brother Joyce Eugene Fisher and wife Marie, Other deceased relatives are sister-in-laws and spouses, Helen and Kenny Felumlee, Mary and Ralph Felumlee, Ruth and Harlan Foltz, and Verne Tom.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3:15 P.M. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Poplar Fork Cemetery, Gratiot with Mr. Don Phillis and Mr. Jeff Iden officiating. Military Honors will be accorded to him by the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29.
The family requests that self-provided face masks be worn and social distancing be observed during the Graveside Service.
