Charles L. Greten, 87, of Zanesville, died at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born February 2, 1924, the eighth child of Frank and Mary Robinson Greten. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and attended schools at Zanesville, Muskingum University and Ohio University. He served as a Naval Science Instructor at Purdue University. Charles was a Navy Combat Veteran of World War II from 1942-1948, serving in Africa, Italy, France and the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He was awarded the Valor of Commendation from the Commander In Chief of The Atlantic Fleet and from the Commanding General, 5th Army Italy Mark Clark. Honors from the French Government, Recognition for service in the Cold War and Congressional Gold Star, was a Honorary Submariner, life Member of VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and a member of the American Legion. He was employed for 10 years during the early days of Phillip Morris in Sales Promotions in Ohio. He worked for RCA Defense Products in Ohio and Indiana as a troubleshooter and quality control. Charles retired in 1987 from the Air Force Aerospace and Metrology Center after 25 years of Federal Service receiving many awards and he was awarded a citation and the Air Force Significant Achievement Award. Charles had an active interest in flying, boating, amateur radio (k8wyl) and Genealogy, compiling a book of over seven thousand family members back to the 1600's. Surviving are a daughter, Gail (Colin) Detty of Zanesville; a son-in-law, Leonard Durst of Zanesville; grandchildren, Gayla (Todd) Gibson, Mollie (Robert) Hatfield, Shane Detty, Nicole (Mark) Brown, Joshua (Megan) Durst; great grandchildren, Amanda Gibson, Matthew Gibson, Jessica Hatfield, Brandon Hatfield, Dylon Brown, Peyton Brown, Logan Durst and Addison Durst; a great-great grandchild, Ryley Gibson; and his beloved companion, Teddy. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 61 years, Gloria C. Markert Greten, who died July 15, 2008; a daughter, Gloria Durst, who died March 31, 2009; five sisters, Kathryn Queen, Genevieve Fuchs, Harriet Brison, Clara Greten and Martha Kincaid ; two brothers, Francis Greten and Vincent Roy Greten, who was killed in action during World War II and is buried in France, leaving three children. Ironically, the great grandfather also was killed in action, leaving two children and is buried in a Mass Grave in Mexico City. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Kudart officiating. He will be entombed with full military honors being conducted by the United States Navy assisted by the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 beside his beloved wife, Gloria, at Zanesville Memorial Park.
