David Owens Flick

November 2, 1941 - December 8, 2023

David Owens Flick, 82, is now with Jesus, his Savior, after a 5-year journey with cancer which ended December 8, 2023.  Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he continued his college education at the University of Cincinnati as a Bearcat.  For 36 years, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio became his stable place of employment where he worked as a Senior Development Engineer before retiring in 2001.

Alongside his wife Lynette (Lowry) Flick, of 56 years, David led their family in a solid foundation of faith.  His children, Greg, Sharon and Carolyn knew John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  Many would describe David as a man with a heart for service in his church and community, and as a man of principle.

David was a contributing member of The Chapel in Akron and for decades sang in the choir.  He was affectionately nicknamed “Choir Stud” by his children.  On any night of the week, one could find him volunteering as a budget counselor, serving on the Board of Trustees at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, or actively participating in The Chapel Adult Bible Fellowship.

Upon retirement, he embarked on his “second career” of service to his church and community.  He enjoyed volunteering for VITA, offering pro bono tax preparation, and providing budget counseling through the Care Ministry of The Chapel.  David served many years as secretary for the Dorchester-Mineola Block Club in which he and Lynette were honored as life members.

But more than numbers, David loved being with his family.  For several decades, until the cancer diagnosis, David and Lynette would rise before dawn and walk miles in the neighborhood. Each of their children, then spouses, and finally grandchildren, would have a street devoted to their prayer time. “What’s the name of the street where you pray for me?” was a common question at family gatherings.

“Cousins Camp” became a yearly summer tradition where he and Lynette would share their love of biking, kayaking, and camping with their grandchildren.  Miles were walked, biked and explored in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Summit Metroparks.  Many summers were spent at Maumee Bay State Park and Traverse City, Michigan, making memories with his family, and were made even better if mint chocolate chip ice cream was involved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Marion Flick.

David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lynette Flick; children: Gregory (Sarah) Flick, Sharon (David) Long, Carolyn (Patrick) Hopkins; sister: Diane (Thomas) Naegele; nieces: Rebecca (Brian) Roman, and Elizabeth (Bernie) Kooi; grandchildren: Caroline and Andrew Flick, Micah and Audrey Long, and Rachel and Will Hopkins.

We are grateful for the compassionate care he received from Dr. Bradley Clifford of Summa Health Medical Group Oncology, Dr. Shyamal Bastola of Genesis Healthcare System, and  Morrison House Hospice Care.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages joining them in giving to Camp Carl in Ravenna, Ohio (www.CampCarl.life), and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Flick Annual Scholarship  in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (www.cvcaroyals.org).
