Dean "Dinger" Taylor

Dean 'Dinger' Arnold Taylor of Zanesville, passed away at his home, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the age of 100. Dean was born September 26, 1917, in Norwich, a son of the late Harry and Ethel Taylor. He was a graduate of New Concord High School and inducted into the John Glenn Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in both basketball and football. He later attended Muskingum College before moving to Miami, FL to serve as the first doorman at the Breakwater Hotel. Dean then enlisted in the Army in WWII where he made the invasion of Salerno, Italy in 1943. He was a proud veteran and grateful to experience an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Mr. Taylor retired from Brockway Glass in 1983 after 42 years of service. He was the oldest member of Norwich Presbyterian Church and a 71 year member of Malta Masonic Lodge #118. Dean loved going to the mall where he spent time visiting friends and always enjoyed lending a helping hand to others. He earned his Dinger nickname from the many horseshoe tournaments he won in his youth, which aided him in becoming a great corn-hole player later in life. Surviving are his two children, Diane (Tim) Shepfer of Zanesville and Jim (Lenore) Taylor of Galena; and five grandchildren, Brian Taylor, Jacqueline (Travis) Thomas, Rick (Sara) Taylor, Scott (Lee Ann) Shepfer, and Ty Shepfer. Dean was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Briella and Grayson Shepfer, and Austin Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Bowman Taylor in 2005; a sister, Ruth Taylor Wilson; and a brother, Kenneth Taylor. Private family services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial with full Military Honors will be accorded to him by the United States Army in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29 at Norwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Norwich.
