Donald D. Warne Sr., 82, of Zanesville, died at 3:48 P.M. on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Genesis Hospital. He was born January 2, 1934, in Zanesville, a son of the late Delmer and Elizabeth Jackson Warne. He was the founder of Donalds Donuts, and ran the business from 1960-2007. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and former state champion archer (long bow) in North Carolina. He was a licensed pilot, and also had his helicopter license. Don started out working in a bakery with his family in Asheville, NC. The first Donalds Donuts began in 1960 in Cherokee, NC and then moved to Pine Street in 1960. After several other moves, in 1984 he ended up in the current location at 2622 Maple Avenue. Following his retirement from the donut shop, it was sold to his son Tom Warne and nephew Jon Gaylord, ensuring that the company would stay in the family hands. His love for the outdoors led to his opening of American Angler Tackle Center in 1976 which ended up expanding into an archery center which remained open for over 10 years. He is survived by his wife Barbara E. Nesselroade Warne, whom he married June 6, 1953; two daughters, Laura (Jim) DeAmbrose of Horsham, PA, and Amy Warne (Nancy Evans) of Lancaster; three sons, Donald Del (Myra) Warne Jr. of Zanesville, Bart (Mary) Warne of St. Augustine, FL, and Tom Warne of Zanesville; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Byron, Alicia, Jennifer, Kaylea, Daniel, Frances, Elizabeth and Hannah; two great grandchildren, Lucas and Liam; a brother Darrell ( Linda) Warne of Zanesville; a sister Darla (Don) Casner of Oxford, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Gaylord.
