Dorothy Eileen Tunis, 88, died at 6:10 P.M. on June 20, 2013, at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House after a long struggle with dementia. A lifelong resident of Muskingum County, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Orville and Elizabeth Frick Winters. A bookkeeper for her family's business, Zanesville Implement, she also worked at the Muskingum County Board of Elections and served as Muskingum Township Clerk. Additionally, Dorothy and her husband James operated a 500 acre farm in northwestern Muskingum County. A 1942 graduate of Zanesville High School, Dorothy was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. Other activities included Richvale Grange, Farm Bureau, Eastern Star, Muskingum County Republican Club, and the Pioneer and Historical Society. An avid card player, she enjoyed attending "bridge club" well into her eighties. A talented genealogist, Dorothy assisted individuals across the U.S. in their efforts to document family origins. She was a founding member of the Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, where she assisted in book publications, First Families of Muskingum County authentications, and cemetery grave documentations. Her extensive research library has been gifted to the genealogy society to continue Dorothy's legacy. She is survived by daughters Susan (Richard) Bunner of Zanesville and Judith (Jerold) Cordell of Johnson City, TN; grandsons Jared (Cara) Hindel and Ryan Morgan of Zanesville, and Brent Morgan of La Plata, MD. Additional family members include great grandsons Gage and Gavin Hindel, her brother Glen (Kitty) Winters, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James Tunis, who died April 8, 2005; still-born daughter Bethany; sisters Evelyn (Harry) Rittberger and Loretta (William) Edwards; beloved grandson Bryan Hindel; and a special son-in-law John Hindel. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 P.M. & 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, where funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, with Chaplain Tim Patton officiating. Dorothy will be buried at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery next to her husband Jim.
