Dr Hazel L. Butterfield

Dr. Hazel L. Butterfield, 94, of Zanesville, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Helen Purcell Home. She was born January 28, 1913, in Maywood, Illinois, the daughter of the late William W. and Sarah A. Griffiths Phillips. She graduated from Sharon Pennsylvania High School in 1931, from Dennison University in 1935 and the Ohio State University in June 1947. She was a retired optometrist, was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was the leader of Wesleyan Circle, a former Board Member, trustee, and administrator. She was also a member of A.O.A. Association, O.O.A. Association, B.P.W. Association, Eastern Star #485, Soroptimist Club, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority at Dennison University and Phi Beta Kappa. She was the Chairman and later served as President of the Development Council at the Helen Purcell Home, Associate Board Member of Bethesda Hospital, Past President of William M. Shinnick Educational Fund and Board of Trustees at the Art Museum. While attending Dennison University as a student, she met her future husband, David, who left his junior year to attend Northern Illinois School of Optometry. After graduating with a degree in education, Hazel taught high school math at Utica High School. A year later she married David. She and David lived in Zanesville from 1936-1943. On January 1, 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Hancock until 1945, at which time he was tragically killed by a friendly fire bomb blast on the landing deck. At the age of 32, Hazel went to the OSU Optometry School and began practice with David's father on July 1, 1947. Surviving are a niece, Shirley Phillips Stehman and her husband Burnell of Irving, Texas and a great niece, Sharon Stehman of Boston, Massachusetts. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. J.G. David B. Butterfield, who died January 21, 1945 and two brothers, Ralph H. Phillips and Dr. Owen M. Phillips. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Butterfield and Phillips Memorial Scholarship at the Muskingum County Community Foundations, 534 Putnam Ave., Zanesville, Ohio, 43701 or to the William M. Shinnick Educational Fund, 601 Underwood Street, Zanesville, Ohio, 43701. No calling hours will be observed. Private graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2007 at the Zanesville Memorial Park with the Rev. John Edwards and the Rev. James Sands officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
