Dr. Walter G. Yeager

December 2, 1925 — August 6, 2012

Dr. Walter G. Yeager, 86, of Zanesville, was called home to be with God on Monday August 6, 2012. He was born December 2, 1925 in Johnstown, PA to the late Elmer F. and Elvira D. Yeager. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy M. McCombie Yeager. They were married for 56 years. Dr. Yeager was educated at Johnstown High School, Parks College of Aeronautical Technology, St. Louis University, Spartan School of Aeronautics, and the University of Pittsburgh. He is a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp Training Command, where he trained fighter pilots to fly B-17 Flying Fortresses. He earned his Doctorate of Theology and Ph.D. at Trinity Theological Seminary. He married Dorothy Mae McCombie of Johnstown, PA on June 17, 1950. They were both musicians, playing the organ, piano, marimba, vibraharp, trombone and baritone horn, and they enjoyed singing vocal duets together. Together they engaged in a musical evangelistic ministry for ten years that took them to churches across the eastern United States and from Guadeloupe to Trinidad in the West Indies chain of islands. Dr. and Mrs. Yeager traveled extensively in many parts of the world in a Biblical education program. They visited the Biblical sites of all the seven churches in Asia Minor, modern day Turkey, listed in Revelation Chapters Two and Three. They toured Italy, Greece, and Bible Corinth, spending many hours in study of Corinth in relation to the Biblical account. In Israel they traveled from Dan to Beersheba which covers all of the sites pertaining to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Because there was no war in the area at that time, they had a chance to study the Battle of the Golan Heights and one of Israel's heroes, Elle Cohan and how he made victory possible. Israel had captured the entire Sinai Peninsula. Dr. and Mrs. Yeager traveled down the eastern side of the Peninsula to Sharm el Sheikh where they boarded a desert bus that took them through the desert Israel would have traveled, to St. Catherine's Monastery. From here they climbed Mt. Sinai, over 7,000 feet tall, where Moses climbed and descended 8 times after talking face to face with God. It was here that he received the Ten Commandments and additional instructions. Next they visited Cairo, Egypt. From their study here, they took camels to the Sphinx which guards the great Pyramid of Cheops. They had the privilege of climbing to the inner top chamber of Cheops. The giants who built this structure built in mathematical knowledge; such as the distance from the earth to the sun and how to square the circles; long before the Greeks found the knowledge. They then went south to the Serapeum where the catafalque of 64 of the Apis bulls is enshrined. The bulls controlled the destiny of Egypt for over 400 years. They traveled up the Nile River to the Valley of the Kings where they visited many of the tombs that have been excavated such as that of the King of Tutankhamun. Dr. and Mrs. Yeager came to Zanesville, Ohio in 1960 to pastor the Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Yeager began his radio ministry that year. "Harmony Time" was first broadcast over the WHIZ radio stations. This broadcast continued for 34 years uninterrupted. "Harmony Time" was also aired over PJD2, the 50,000 watt station in Antigua which covers the West Indies Islands. He directed "Adventure Time" with the many voices of Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Gamble and his children Joel and Melanda, a children's broadcast aired over the WHIZ radio stations each Saturday morning. He pioneered "Echoes From Calvary", a live telecast over WHIZ-TV every Sunday morning. He supervised the building of a new building next to the church. This housed the Calvary Baptist Bookstore and the Calvary Baptist Print Shop. The print shop did all the church printing including many of Dr. Yeager's books and pamphlets. Millions of Gospel tracts were printed and sent around the world to English speaking countries free of charge. The church operated 16 busses bringing people to church and Sunday School. Bus 17 was a tour bus used for the "Jolly 60's", our Senior Citizen program. Pastor Yeager was vitally interested in youth. He built large Sunday School programs and directed two international youth programs, Awana and King's Kids. The church bought 42 acres of prime property to expand our facilities at 4100-4200 Boggs Road. Dr. Yeager led the church in building a large geodesic dome that they called "The Dome Cathedral." When completed, the architect estimated the building to be worth over 3 million dollars. The congregation entered the dome debt free. With the large platform available many types of activities were available. They had cantatas and various musical groups. Dr. Yeager organized the "Calvary Echoes Quartet" in which he sang baritone. Four video cameras plus a full crew made possible the video taping of these events. Most of these programs are now archived on DVD's. Since all Bible translations since 1611 AD have errors, Dr. Yeager used the infalliable King James Bible of 1611 AD in all of his preaching and teaching. He authored numerous Gospel tracts, pamphlets, and complete books such as: "Bible Answers for Bible Believers", "The Book of Job", and "God's Program and Satan's Counterfeit". He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Air Force Association and The American Air Museum in Britain, a memorial to the 30,000 flyers who gave their lives for America and the American Flag during WWII. His hobbies were collecting classical and sacred music, plus unusual guns. Dr. Yeager's life mission ended Monday, August 6, 2012, and he went to Heaven to be with his parents, friends, his beloved wife Dorothy, and all those who were "saved" under his ministry. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 p.m. & 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, and one hour prior to the service on Friday. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2012 with Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Gamble officiating. Dr. Yeager will be entombed next to his wife at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery where VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the U.S. Air Force will hold full military honors.
