Elton L. Hill Sr.

October 2, 1920 — March 18, 2008

Elton Lyle Hill Sr., 87, of Zanesville, died at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at his residence. He was born October 2, 1920, in Lathrope, Ohio, a son of the late Henry J. and Eva Jane Holbert Hill. He retired in 1983 after 30 years of service from the Hot Mill and the Shipping Department at Armco Steel. He was a member of the Baker Street Church of God, where he served as Head Trustee and Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, School Bus Driver, Bible School Coordinator and was the Construction Superintendent of the church when being built. He was a WWII Veteran serving as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps Ground Forces in China, Burma and India Theaters. He was Ham Operator W8FPI and was a jack of all trades and master of all. Surviving are his wife, Pastor Josephine F. Hill, whom he married, June 22, 1946, of the home; four daughters, Margaret (Leonard) Johnson of Hopewell, Mary Frances (Willie) Catchings of Los Baos, California, Paula Jane (Ashvinder) Mathon of Steeleville, Illinois and Betty Jo Hill of Canal Winchester, Ohio; three sons, Elton L. (AnneMarie) Hill Jr., John Henry Hill and Nathan A. (Wendy) Hill, all of Zanesville; two foster sons, John Thompkins (Tom Hill) of Worthington, Ohio and Samuel Newland (Sam Hill) of Zanesville; a sister, Jean Norris of Zanesville; two brothers, Leonard (Bessie) Hill Sr. of Blue Rock, Ohio and Luther (Anna Mae) Hill Sr. of Zanesville; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Hill and Ruth Norris and four brothers, Melvin Hill Sr., Alvin Hill, Robert Hill Sr. and an infant brother. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville and two hours prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Baker Street Church of God, 718 Baker Street, Zanesville with the Minister Leonard Hill Jr. officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2008 at Woodlawn Cemetery. VFW George Selsam Post 1058 will hold full military rites at the gravesite. A mercy meal will be served at the Jackson Street Community Center, 928 Jackson Street, Zanesville, following funeral services on Saturday, March 22, 2008.
