Elton Edgar Shuey of Zanesville, Ohio, passed away at the Genesis Hospice Morrison-House on Thursday, July, 11, 2024, at 96 years old. He was born on the family farm in Hopewell, Ohio on December 21, 1927, the son of Harley Walter and Ruth G (Kreager) Shuey.
He leaves behind two daughters, Deborah (Greg) Grove of Huntingdon PA and Anita Thompson of Zanesville, 6 grandchildren, Laurie (Dennis) McGillicuddy, Lewis (Megan) Grove, Daniel (Kristin) Shuey, Douglas (Sarah) Shuey, Sabrina (Daniel) Godfrey, and Caleb (Jeni Rose) Shuey. He also had 10 great-grandchildren, Amelia and Vincent McGillicuddy, Noah, Max and Lydia Shuey, Ella Shuey, and Liam, James, Zain and Gwen Shuey. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Besides his parents, his wife Lula Russell passed away in September 2022. Also, he lost his son Carl Shuey in 2016 and son-in-law Larry Thompson in 2013. He had 6 brothers Harold, Raymond, Robert, Herbert, Ernest and Kenneth that proceeded him in death and a sister Leila Bates.
One sister, Eileen Shuey Bates Hinkle of Seville Ohio, survives out of his 8 siblings. Three sister-in-laws Donna Shuey, Flora Hill and Shirley Drushal remain as well.
Edgar was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and then Market Street Baptist. His church was very important to him and he served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He also enjoyed singing in the choir.
He and his wife Lula became Winter Texans in 1991 and traveled to the Lower Rio Grande to the Tip of Texas RV resort in Pharr every winter for 25 years. He enjoyed golfing and playing on the volleyball team until he was 88.
His first occupation was farming and later hauling milk in cans from farms to dairies. He could lift 2 cans over 100 pounds each and sling them both up into a truck bed. Then for over 25 years he was a Sanitarian in the Muskingum County Health Department where he was responsible for inspecting farms, dairies, schools, restaurants and other public places. He was a well-respected man and had many friends.
Friends and family may call from 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM on Saturday July 20, 2024, at the Market Street Baptist Church, 140 N. 6th Street, Zanesville, Ohio.
A cremation will take place under the direction of the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE. Edgar will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Lula at Williams Cemetery, Zanesville.
