Eugene “Gene” Roger Murdock, 95, of Zanesville, died Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Willow Haven Care Center.
He was born August 13, 1928, in Hamden, Ohio, the son of Lawrence & Mella Murdock.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Young (Bill).
He was born during the depression and grew up during WWII on a family farm in Hamden. His family initially had no electricity or indoor plumbing and heated with coal. Besides helping on the farm with the garden and livestock, he worked in the family general store.
He graduated from high school in 1945. He studied education in college and graduated in 1949, and became a teacher and coach in Vinton County. He taught math and coached basketball and track. He went into the Army in 1950, and served as a corporal during the Korean War. After 2 years in the service, he continued teaching and coaching and got married in 1957. He later became a school superintendent at West Muskingum in 1965, and Muskingum County superintendent in 1970, until retiring in 1987.
He was involved in several organizations such as Lions Club and Mended Hearts.
His hobbies were reading, fishing, hunting, socializing with friends, walking, jigsaw puzzles, and travelling.
He is survived by Mona Murdock (wife of 67 years) and two children; Jeff (Michele) Murdock and Linda Adams; grandson: Bradley Adams; step grandchildren: Keith (Katie) Cavote and Danielle Cavote and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service at 12:00 Noon, Friday, March 15, 2024, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with Pastor Mark Raaker officiating. Gene will be laid to rest in Zanesville Memorial Park, 1475 Military Rd, Zanesville.
