Gary A. Bowles, 74, of Zanesville passed away at 1:34 a.m. on November 2, 2013 at Genesis Hospice- Morrison House. He was born September 10, 1939 at home in Zanesville, a son of the late Francis and Thelma Henery Bowles. Gary graduated from Zanesville High School in 1957 and went directly into the US Navy for 3 ½ years. He often spoke of his time in the Navy and his many ports of call and the experiences he had. Upon leaving the Navy he returned home to Zanesville to marry his high school sweetheart, Sandra Elizabeth in February 1960. Gary then joined the Zanesville Fire Department where he worked for the next 31 years until retiring for the first time in 1991. From 1991 until 2000.He did surveying work for the Robinson Surveying all around Ohio. He was always active and enjoyed the outdoors. He joined the Zanesville Country Club in 2000 as a grounds crew member and worked there until retiring again in 2012. Gary was a member of The American Legion for 29 years, volunteered at The Salvation Army and attended Fair Oaks Baptist Church. Gary touched the lives of many and always had a smile on his face and a funny thing to say. He will be missed by all that knew him. Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra E. Trumpower Bowles; two sons, Randy (Kelly) Bowles of Enfield, CT and Scott (Wendy) Bowles of Evansville, IN; six granddaughters, Robyn, Erin, Delaney, Emilee, Ansley and Hailey; two grandsons, Jake and Aaron; three sisters, Letha Nabb of Zanesville, Leah Smith of Zanesville and Lillian Smith of Mobile, AL; two sisters in-laws, Shawn Hanson and Lee Ann Bostain; a brother-in-law, Wesley Lester and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Lyllis Guss, Lois Pace, Loa June Roy and Louise Liggett; and two brothers Henry Bowles and Dale Bowles. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m on Monday, November 4, 2013 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, OH where the funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 with Rev. Don Adams officiating. Gary will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery where the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the U.S. Navy will hold full military honors. The family would like to extend a special thank you to friends and members of the church who helped during this difficult time.
