Genevieve Peyton Brown

Genevieve Elliott Peyton Brown, 87, of Gratiot, died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, Novemebr 3, 2007 at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born February 5, 1920 in Rich Hill Township, Muskingum County, a daughter of the late Ray W. and Martha Belle Watson Elliott. She was a school teacher and principal. She graduated from Ohio University, attended Ohio State University and Muskingum College. Mrs. Brown served as a teacher at the Walker School and Locust Grove School and was the first principal at Dillion Elementary School retiring in 1979. She served as a hostess at the YMCA Teen Tyme Club from 1943 to 1953. Mrs. Brown was the assistant to the entry clerk secretary and the became the entry clerk secretary from 1948 to 1996. She continued to volunteer at the fair board office during fair week for several years. She was a 4-H Club Member for 11 years and served as an advisor for several years. She was a member of the Rix Mills Presbyterian Church and attended Gratiot United Methodist Church. Genevieve volunteered at Bethesda Hospital for many years. Surviving are a son, Ray E. (Susan) Peyton of Zanesville; two step-daughters, Nancy (Jeffrey) McIntire of Zanesville and Katherine (Michael) Wilfong of Middleport; three sisters, Elsie McLees of New Concord, Lenna ( Jack) Nowels of Loudenville and Edith (Charles) Hahn of Columbus; a brother, J. Lawrence Elliot of Norwich; a brother-in-law, Robert M. Tom of Chandlersville; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Elliott of Berkeley, CA; nine grandchildren, Scott (Jill) Peyton of Cincinnati, Gretchen Peyton of Chicago, IL. and Katelyn Peyton of Zanesville, Chad, Jared, and Amanda Uphold all of Zanesville and Melissa ( Michael) Van Meter of Marietta, Michael and Beth Wilfong of Middleport and ten great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul W. Peyton in 1959, her second husband, Ross E. Brown who died in 2000; a sister, Ada Elliott Tom; a brother, F. Irvine Elliott and a sister-in-law, Betty Elliott. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville and one hour prior to services at the church.. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Gratiot United Methodist Church, Gratiot with Pastor Martha Gross officiating. Burial will follow at Salt Creek Cemetery, Chandlersville. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Muskingum Academic Fund, 4880 West Pike, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
