Gloria Marlene Carney, age 72, of Zanesville, Ohio, died at 5:01 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2006 at the Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born July 17, 1934, in Zanesville, the daughter of Hallie Switzer Alexander and the late George Alexander. Marlene was a retired school teacher, having taught deaf education at the Pioneer Elementary School. She also taught Special Education at Sheridan Elementary School and later at Tri-Valley Schools where she retired. Marlene was a member of the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. Surviving are her mother, Hallie Switzer Alexander of Zanesville; a daughter, Lisa Ferguson of Zanesville; three sons, J. Michael (Leesia) Carney of Delaware, Ohio, Brent A. (Marlene) Carney of Baltimore, Ohio and Gregory S. (Erin) Carney of Zanesville; a sister, Donna Coleman of Columbus, and a brother George (Mary) Alexander Jr. of New Port Ritchie, Fl.; six grandchildren, Rhiannon Carney, Jeremiah and Sarah Ferguson, Emily Carney, Brent Carney II, and Hailee Carney. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Carney who died December 19, 2005. Friends may call 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2006 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Riggs officiating. A caring cremation will follow the service.
