Gloria Jean Englehart, RN, 86, of Zanesville, joined her Lord and Savior October 23rd, 2012 after a long illness. She was a resident of Forest View Health Campus. She was born October 18, 1926 at her home on Wayne Ave. in Zanesville, a daughter of the late John Henry and Mary Louise Schultheis Englehart. She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church. Gloria graduated from Zanesville High School in 1944 and was secretary of her class. She was an honor student and enjoyed studying commercial art design. She entered the Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing, where she made many lifelong friends, and enlisted in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, where she learned discipline and regimentation while studying. Upon graduating, she received her R.N. in 1947 and began her career at the "old" Bethesda Hospital "on the hill." She later joined the surgical practice of Drs. Phillips, Urban and Donoho, assisting Dr. Donald A. Urban for more than 30 years before his retirement from what became Surgical Associates, Inc. She then assisted Dr. Thomas H. Diehl, and remained at Surgical Associates until her retirement in 1994. She was a loyal and devoted surgical nurse and was well-known on the post-surgery hospital units as a stickler for rules and procedures. She delighted in learning new surgical skills, and was exhilarated by new technology like the laparoscope. Gloria remained active in the Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association and attended their 50th graduation anniversary celebration in 1997 with many of her fellow nurses. Gloria enjoyed and appreciated her co-workers, especially Cindy Wallace Price, and had a special love for her many nieces and nephews. Her greatest loves were her much-spoiled dogs Sandy, Dolly, Holly and Polly. Her love of art and fine skills with her hands gave her an outlet for creativity, and she showered family and friends with her handmade Christmas ornaments and decorative Springerle cookies. She enjoyed traveling with her nursing friends as a young woman, and later enjoyed photography, jigsaw puzzles and receiving funny emails from friends. She supported many charitable causes, including the Muskingum County Animal Shelter. A lover and collector of books, she was particularly fond of classic movies as well. Surviving are her brother, Wayne K. Englehart; nieces Eleanor Englehart Ingram (Fred); Sue Trout Imhausen; Mary Englehart Baldwin (David); Amy Trout Gibson (John); and nephews, Jeffrey A. Englehart (Ingrid); John Thomas Englehart (Jennie); Richard A. Englehart (Susan); Charles Englehart; Mark K. Trout (Pam); and Andrew D. Trout (Jane); and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John J. Englehart, and sister, Barbara Englehart Trout; sisters-in-law Ruth Fulton Englehart and Mildred Mason Englehart; and a niece, Gretchen Englehart. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church, at the corner of Market & 7th Street with Rev. Mark Combs officiating. She will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gloria's memory to The Animal Shelter Society: 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, Ohio 43701; the Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association: C/O Genesis Foundation, 1135 Maple Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701; or a charity of one's choice. Gloria's family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Muskingum County Home, Forest View Health Campus and Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care for the care they gave Gloria over the past six years.
