Harry E. West, 89, of Zanesville died at 7:13 A.M. Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House, Zanesville surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in a small coal mining community of Cumberland, at home on Carl Street, on September 3, 1932 in Guernsey County to the late Harry J. and Emma Florence (King) West. Harry was a Times Recorder, Zanesville Signal, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ritsburg Press and on Thursday’s the Saturday Evening Post Paper Carrier starting in the 6th grade of school to the middle of his 12th year along with working in the underground coal mine at Ren Rock during his junior summer vacation and graduating in 1950 from Cumberland Spencer High School. Harry then went to work in Zanesville at Burnham Boilers in Licking View in November 1950 until he heard the Korean War call in November of 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy spending 13 weeks in the desert of Camp Elliot West of San Diego. Upon graduation he returned to Ohio for some R&R before returning to San Diego to board the famous Dirty-Thirty DD730 Destroyer in dry docks receiving repairs from the beating it received firing the first volly of shots during the Inchon Invasion.

Harry then delivered bread and milk as an Omar bread man for twelve years. Then delivered Conn’s Potato Chips for 3 ½ years before spending 24 years at the Newark Airforce Base Building guiding systems for the C5 aircraft. Harry spent 34 years in retirement with his loved ones fishing on the banks of the Muskingum River.

Harry was a member of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, Lafayette Lodge #79 50-plus years; 32nd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge-50 plus years; Amrou Grotto of Zanesville-50 plus years; Lifetime Member of American Legion Post 0029; Lifetime Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1058; Fraternal Order of Eagles-61 years; Officer of Zanesville and President in 1965 and 2015-13 years; District #5 Officer of 12 Cities-4 years; Deputy State President of District #5 12 Cities-2 years; Central Zone Officer of 34 Cities-5 years; Ohio State Officer and Ohio State President with 364 Speaking State Assignments – 17 years; Ohio State Necrology Chairman-10 years; Ohio’s Out of State Judge and State Ritual Chairman-10 years; Eastern Divisional Chairman of 22 States of Eastern United States-19 years; One of five Justices of the United States, Mexico and Canada-2 years; Chief Justice traveling United States and Canada-1 year; Treasurer of Zanesville at age 87-past 2 years.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an organization of people helping people. Humanitarians they are called. Dedicated in so many ways. Always giving of their hearts, strength, and monies.

In every walk of his life, he loved to serve others and the community around him.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa (Brian) King; a three sons, John (Rebecca) West, Drew A. West and Barry D. West; eight grandchildren, Kyle (Beth) Clapper, Keri (David) Bay, Melissa (Trent) Nethers, Matthew (Megan) King, Joshua West, Nicolas West, Cody West and Kelly West; seven great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Tenley Bay, Kenzie and Zoey Clapper, Emilia and Leo Nethers, and Owen King; two brother-in-law, "Bunk" Strauss and Richard (Dick) Blaney; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Jo Ann (Strauss) West who died September 29, 2016; a brother, Clair; and a sister Margaret.

Friends and family may call from 1:00 – 5:00 on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE with Eagles Services following. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, April 11, 2022 with Mr. Chris Steele officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded to him by the United States Navy, VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and American Legion Post 29.
