Howard Owen Patterson, 98, of Gratiot, died at 3:56 A.M. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. He was born September 3, 1919, to the late Owen H. and Ersel (Osborn) Patterson. As a young adult, Howard worked on the farm, in oil fields, and also drove school bus with his father. Howard served in the United States Army with an honorable discharge. Howard retired from Rockwell International of Newark and Kaiser Aluminum of Heath. He was a member of the American Legion Post #756 for over sixty seven years, a member of Jackson Lodge #85, Grand Lodge of Masons of Ohio, Eastern Star Chapter 486 for over fifty years and a member of Ohio ODD Fellows of Newark. He served and was the founding fire chief of the National Trails Fire Department in Gratiot volunteering for over forty years. Surviving are his sons, Sam H. (Nancy) and Carroll L. (Patty) Patterson; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of sixty four years, Jean, who passed away April 2005; four sisters, Evelyn Roberts, Gladys Smith, Ruth Berry, and Wilma Davis; and two sisters deceased at birth. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 with Pastor Ron Griffin officiating. He will be laid to rest at Poplar Fork Cemetery, Gratiot with full Military Honors being accorded to him by the United States Army in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29.
