Howard Butch Zwelling

Howard Butch Zwelling, 81, of Zanesville, died at 3:43 A.M. on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. He was born December 11, 1936, in Zanesville, a son of the late Morris and Deborah Berman Zwelling. He graduated from Muskingum College and went on to Ohio Northern College to earn his law degree. He served over the Zanesville Municipal Court for sixteen years and the Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas for six years. Butch then went on to become the Mayor of Zanesville for seven years and then back into private practice. He was a member of the Muskingum County Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, Sertoma, Past President of the Zanesville High School Quarterback Club, and many other organizations. Butch also volunteered at the Animal Shelter, was a member of the Democratic Party, a member of Beth Abraham Synagogue, an avid sports fan of ZHS Athletics and Ohio State sports. Butch was a true public servant. He served many worthy causes and gave generously to all. He truly loved Zanesville and his family meant the most to him. He is survived by a son, Ross Zwelling, of the home; two brothers, Jerold and Ivan Zwelling; two grandchildren, Kamden Spiker and Ethan Zwelling; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sister-in-laws, Ruth Zwelling and Rochelle Zwelling.
