James A. "Jake" Hawkins, 70, of Zanesville, passed away at 9:37 P.M. on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House on Forest Avenue. He was born July 15, 1943, in Zanesville, to the late Mack McKinley Hawkins and Thelma Louise Hummel Hawkins. He worked over 30 years at Putnam Transfer and Storage Co. He enjoyed life. He was a real icon at the Zanesville Farmer's Market throughout the market season and enjoyed selling his wares at various flea markets in surrounding counties. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Mona Rae Houston Hawkins, whom he married August 17, 1974; three sisters, Charlene (Tom) Wilson, Flora Hutcheson, and Lora (Estess) Jenkins; a brother Roy (Judy) Hawkins; five brothers-in-law, Larry E. Houston, William "Bill" (Linda) Houston, Terry L. Houston, Ken R. Houston, and Jeff K. (Tina) Houston; and two sisters-in-law, Sue A. (Max) Lohman and Marsha K. (Allen) Griffin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Maxine Bryan; father-in-law George B. "Red" Houston and mother-in-law Eva Wanita Ferrell Houston; and a brother-in-law George Houston Jr. A dignified cremation has taken place. Friends and family may call from 12:00-2:00 P.M. & 4:00 P.M. until time of Celebration of Life Service at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with the Rev. Mr. B. N. "Pete" Peterson officiating, and with the eulogy to be given by Ron Bucci. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home: 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701 to help defray funeral expenses.
