James G. Kappes

Zanesville

James G. Kappes, 67, of Zanesville, died at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at his home. He was born July 20, 1954, in Tokyo, Japan, a son of the late James and Estelle (Eskey) Kappes.  He graduated from Zanesville High School, attended Ohio University Zanesville, and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He worked at Bolin Funeral Home, Byrd Ambulance, Delong & Baker Funeral Home, Hilliard Lyons, the Ohio Company as a financial advisor, the Muskingum Prosecutor’s Office, and then the Muskingum County Common Pleas Court where he retired from in February of 2016.

He was the Secretary of FOP Lodge #5; Muskingum Residential Board Member; member of Charity Newsies; served two terms as President of the Zanesville Jaycees where he was active with numerous projects and events during his fourteen years of service, including Special Olympics, Rally in the Alley, Stars & Stripes on the River, and the Night Moves 5K; he was also involved with the Miss SEO Pageant, United Way, Zaney Follies, and Muskingum Amity Lodge #5. Jim enjoyed volunteering for numerous other local non-profit organizations. He was an avid Ohio State University Buckeye and Cleveland Browns fan, past president of the Parrot Heads of Zanesville, and enjoyed cruises and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Debbon (Schaum) Kappes whom he married June 30 2001; children, Brent Kappes, Michelle (Todd) Arnold, and stepson, Dr. Shane (Brandy) Tilton; papaw to Emily and Molly Kappes, and Samantha and Kendall Arnold; and his furry companion, Sloop.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Nick Tilton; and his beloved Tilly.

Friends and family may call from 2:00 – 4:00 and 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at North Terrace Church of Christ, 1420 Brandywine Blvd, Zanesville. Masonic Services will be held by Lodge of Amity #5 at 7:00 P.M. and FOP Services will be held at 7:15P.M. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, with Pastor Mike McGuire officiating.  He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville.
