James L. Mathews, 73, of Zanesville, died at 9:56 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2010 at Arthur G. James Cancer Center, Columbus, Ohio. He was born May 25, 1937, a son of the late Lawrence E. & Ruth C. Henery Mathews. He retired after 29 1/2 years of service as a Conductor for CSX Transportation (formerly B & O Railroad). He was an avid bingo player, hunter and fisherman. Jim served his country as a U.S. Marine Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kathy" M. Bolen Mathews who he married in 1991; four sons, Steven (Melissa) Mathews Sr. of Wellston, Oh., Brad Mathews of Lakeland, Fld., Robert (Carrie) Postlethwait of Middletown, Oh., and Scot (Jeanette) Mathews of Sabina, Oh.; three daughters, Tami (Michael) Kennedy of Cambridge, Clarissa Lynn (Jim) Zack of Cleveland, and Stacy (Kevin) DeVore of Lore City, Oh.; seventeen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Gene (Cathy) Mathews of Zanesville; one sister, Emma Kay (Richard) Howard of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a nephew, David Mathews. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, where the funeral service will be held at 10:00a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 with Pastor Steven Mathews Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park with The United States Marines in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post #1058 who will hold full military honors at the grave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Animal Shelter Society, Inc., 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, Ohio, 43701.
