James L. Shipley

James Laird Shipley, 80, of Zanesville, passed away at 10:38 P.M. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House. He was born April 8, 1933, in Fredericktown, Ohio, to Duane and Luella Sargent Shipley. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict, and graduated from Kent State University in 1960 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He enjoyed traveling with his children and grandchildren. Jim worked for Westfield Insurance Company from 1961 until 1968. He joined Miller-Lynn Insurance Service, Inc. in 1968, becoming President in 1985 and serving until his death. In 1989 he purchased Smith-Brogan Insurance Service in Newark. He continued working in the business with his son and daughter until he passed. He was a past member of the Board of Directors for Century National Bank and a member of the Zanesville Country Club since 1968. He loved playing golf with his many friends and with his grandson Nicholas James Shipley. Surviving are his wife of 54 years Carol E. McDevitt Shipley, whom he married October 9, 1959, of the home; son Scott (Jody) of Newark; daughters Kimberly (Harry) Reed of Hopewell and Jill (Jeff) Thompson of Macon, GA; grandchildren Jillian Shipley, Nicholas J. Shipley, Andrea Shipley, Joshua Thompson, and twins Rebecca and Sarah Jane Thompson; a very special third daughter Jane (John) Bruning and her family William Bruning, Catherine Bruning and Rebecca (Patrick) Frye; aunts Elouise Hagon and Margaret (Howard) McIntire; brother-in-law David K. (Gloria) McDevitt of North Lima; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Gordon Shipley; and a sister Sue Blackburn. Friends and family may call from 1:00-3:00 P.M. and 5:00 until time of the Celebration of Life Service at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with Rev. Mark Matzke officiating. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville, at a later date with full military honors being presented by the United States Air Force in conjunction with VFW George Selsam Post #1058. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Animal Shelter Society: 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, Ohio 43701: to the charity of one's choice; or just remember Jim when you are on the golf course.
