Jane Louise (Nettelhorst) Kearns

February 7, 1919 — May 8, 2012

Jane Louise Kearns, 93, of Zanesville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at her home in Zanesville. She was born February 7, 1919, at the family farm on the banks of the Big Walnut in Delaware County. She came to Muskingum County as her father was named the supervisor at the Zanesville Experiment Farm in the 1930's. She graduated from Sunbury High School Class of 1937, where she was an excellent student. She received her teaching certificate through Ohio University-Athens. She was a teacher at Townsend, Licking View and did substitute work for Richey, Dillon and Locust Grove. She had previously been active in many organizations, including Timber Run Grange, Farm Bureau, OCCL (Ohio Child Conservation League) and United Commercial Travelers. She enjoyed flower arranging and received first prizes at the Muskingum County Fair. She enjoyed bird watching and traveling with her husband in the United States, Canada and Europe. She loved books; some of her favorites were James Herriott. She contacted him on one of her travels to England and got his autograph. She enjoyed sports and was a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball teams; also the Cincinnati Reds. Mrs. Kearns was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and formerly of Coburn United Methodist Church where she enjoyed the Sunday School Class taught by the late Fern Rowlands. She was baptized at Finley United Methodist Church where she has been attending for the last several years. She was married to Harry D. Kearns for 71 years, whom she married June 19, 1940, in the front yard of her parents' home on the Experiment Farm. Her parents Merrett and Joanna (Metzger) Nettelhorst preceded her in death. Jane lovingly tended to Harry and supported his work with Standard Oil of Ohio (SOHIO). She is survived by two sons, Grant (Jean) Kearns of Marysville and Charles Kearns of Zanesville; a daughter, Sue A. (Kenneth) Norris of Marion; four grandchildren, Sean and Laura Kearns and Mark and Emily Norris; and two brothers, Paul (Jean) Nettelhorst of Westerville and Charles (Ruby) Nettelhorst of Fort Myers, FL. Friends and family may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 at the Finley United Methodist Church, 4455 Pinecrest Dr., Zanesville with Pastor Chuck Norris officiating. Jane will be laid to rest at Williams Cemetery, near Zanesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Finley United Methodist Church, 4455 Pinecrest Dr., Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
