Jean Carter Ankrum, 84, died on Thursday, April 16, 2009. Jean was born April 12, 1925, in Norman, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Ralph James and Edna Rayburn Carter. She married her beloved Bob Ankrum in 1952 in Witchita, Kansas, on the baseball field at home plate. Jean graduated with a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. After graduation, she was an instructor at the speech and hearing clinic at the University of Oklahoma before coming to Zanesville to develop and implement the hearing impaired program for Southeastern Ohio. She was the director of the program for 32 years before retiring and starting the first teachers supply store in Zanesville, The School House. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and the Junior Bethesda League. She is survived by her son, Trent (Cheryl) Ankrum of Zanesville; grandchildren, Andrew and Alaina Ankrum of Zanesville; special neighbors, Loren (Marianne) Bates, Dick (Irene) Dillon, Dan (Shirley) Knox, Jack and Steve Dillon; and special friends, Jeanne Mead and Hal and Joanne Naragon. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Carter Ankrum, who died May 9, 1969; and two brothers, William and James Carter. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Dean Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
