Jean E. Schubach

Jean Elizabeth Schubach, of Zanesville, died peacefully on August 1st at the age of 87 in Zanesville. She was the wife of Carl David Schubach who died in 1992. Survivors are her son, David, of Hollywood, CA.; daughter, Linda (Jeffrey) Gutridge of Dayton, OH; and grandson, Colin Gutridge. A brother and two sisters also survive: Colin Young of Bermuda, Marion Sampson of Atlanta, GA and Shirley Peyton of Philadelphia, PA. Jean was born August 31, 1920, on the British island of Bermuda to the late Edmund Young and Gertrude Reed Young. She attended the Bermuda High School for Girls and studied nursing at Edinburgh College, Scotland. The outbreak of WWII necessitated her return to the island before completion. During the war, she fell in love with Carl Schubach, an American officer, who along with 6000 other soldiers, had been shipwrecked and furloughed on the island. After the war, they married on May 13, 1948 and established their home in Zanesville, where Carl worked in the family business - Longshore Music Store, and later, Schubach Music Center. Jean was a partner in Schubach Music Center. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church and many civic organizations, including the All Around Club, Girl Scouts Executive Council and Green Thumb Garden Club. She will be remembered for her warm personality and devotion to her family and friends. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the St. James Episcopal Church, 155 N 6th St., Zanesville with the Rev'd Kathryn P. Clausen officiating. Jean will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Canton Area Office, 4815 Munson St. NW, Canton, Ohio, 44718.
