Jerome Grosshandler

April 29, 1924 — March 23, 2013

Jerome "Jerry" Grosshandler Jerry was born April 29, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio to Jack and Ida Grosshandler. He was a standout varsity athlete in track and field, swimming, diving, and gymnastics. He graduated from Cleveland Glenville High School in 1942 and attended Case School of Applied Science. In 1943 he volunteered to fight the Nazis serving in the United States Army in Germany during WWII for which he received the Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts and other Medals. He fought continuously for 120 days and nights in the Battle of the Bulge. He helped to liberate the Palace of Versailles, Paris and Metz, France as well as other cities in Belgium and Prison Camps in Germany. July 14, 1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Grosshandler. They were married for 66 years until her passing. For a short time in 1946 Jerry attended Ohio State University. In 1947 he worked for twenty years as a night manager at the Waldorf/Presto in Zanesville, Ohio and owned a share of the Zane Hotel from 1967 to 1975. He then owned a share of Floods Bar and Grill from 1975 until it closed. He and Helen were partners in their business enterprises and best friends since 1941. Jerry has a loving brother, Stanley who is deceased and a loving, living sister, Renee Grosshandler Baum. He admired both of them. He is very proud of his children, Dr. Mark (Rose) Grosshandler , Dr. David (Stacey) Grosshandler, Elaine (Rob) Joseph, and a deceased veteran son Richard Grosshandler, and grandchildren Jennifer, Richard, Jacob, Zachary, Dr. Joshua, Adam, Bree Grosshandler, Frank and Dick Joseph. He was a member of the Beth Abraham Synagogue in Zanesville, Ohio. He was loved and respected by all who knew him in his workplace and residences. Jerry passed away peacefully on March 23, 2013. Graveside services will be held at 3:15 pm Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Beth Abraham Jewish Cemetery, Zanesville.
