John Gary Havens

December 27, 1935 — January 14, 2016

John Gary "Omar" Havens, 80, of Zanesville, died Thursday, January 14, 2016, at his home. He was born December 27, 1935, in Zanesville, a son of the late John D. and Olive Marie Riehl Havens. He retired from Anchor Hocking where he had been a mold maker and was a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Omar was a member of Immanuel Church of Zanesville, the FOPA Lodge #16 and had served as Chaplain for many years, American Legion Post #29, VFW George Selsam Post #1058, and the Fraternal order of Eagles #302 where he was also Past President. He is survived by two daughters, Jan (Jerry) Wagner of Rock Island, IL, and Shelly Willey and significant other Kevin Novaria, of Zanesville; a son Jay (Berta) Havens of Cooper City, FL; six grandchildren, Nicole Willey, Melissa Havens, Danielle Havens, John (Kate Austin) Vinsel, Kelly (Josh) Cole and Justin Embrey; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Peg (Larry) Trout of Nelsonville and Carolyn (Johnny) Swingle of Nashport; one brother Steve (Ruthie) Havens of Mt. Perry; a brother-in-law Rick (Janet) Shelly of Zanesville; many special nieces and nephews, including special niece Allison (J.R.) Pruden; and all of his great friends, including special friend Melissa Morgan; and his beloved dog Candy Havens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Karen Havens, who died July 27, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, January 18, 2016, at the Immanuel Church of Zanesville, 105 S 7th Street, with Pastor Mitch Reed officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors presented by the United States Navy in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post #1058 and the American Legion Post #29. Arrangements were entrusted to the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Church of Zanesville: 105 S 7th Street, Zanesville, OH 43701; or to the Animal Shelter Society: 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, OH 43701.
