John Daniel "Danny" Kreis, 58, of Pataskala, formerly of Columbus and Zanesville, died at 12:55 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007 at his home following an illness from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Danny was born September 10, 1948, in Zanesville. He was a 1966 graduate of Adamsville High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in Italy and Japan, during the Vietnam War. He was retired from Georgia Pacific in Columbus. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Zanesville. He was a member of Am-Vets Post 51, American Legion Post 283 in Pickerington and VFW Post 9473. Danny was a great golfer and sportsman. "No one could hit a golf ball like Danny Kreis". He was inducted into the Zanesville District Golf Association Hall of Fame in October 2005. He won many honors and was well known in the local golf circles. He was an avid Ohio State Football fan. Danny's struggle with this horrible disease can only be described as gallant. He is survived by his mother, Treasure Arter Kreis and his father, C. Robert Kreis, both of Zanesville; his daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Ben Jessup of Pataskala; a grandson, Asa Daniel Jessup of Pataskala; his longtime companion, Charlotte Vickers of Pataskala; a brother, R. Douglas Kreis of Zanesville; three sisters, Diane (Don Baker) Dalton of Zanesville, Debbie (Greg) Strohl of Somerset and Darla (Rich) Wieber of Thornville. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Steve Evec; Gina's mother, Betty Jane (Paul) Kowalski Kreis Kunz of Millersport; step-brother, David (Nancy) Mallett of Harbor Hills and numerous nieces, nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, C. Edwin and Fanny Janney Arter; his paternal grandparents, John W. and Iona Trottman Kreis; a niece, Stephanie "Buff" Bowen; his step-mother, Dorothy Bates Kreis and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Noll and Jim Hewitt. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the funeral home with Rev. Frank Waters officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors conducted by the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 at the New Hope Cemetery in Adamsville.
