John Kirk Mathers, 92, of Springfield, a former Zanesville resident, died at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at the Masonic Home in Springfield, Ohio. He was born November 3, 1914, in Beverly, Ohio, the son of the late Clarence and Lucy Nelson Mathers. Kirk was the former Chief Maintenance Engineer for the Zanesville School System. He was a longtime member of the Coburn United Methodist Church, a member of the LaFayette Masonic Lodge #79 F & AM, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge. He was an avid bowler, golfer and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Surviving are two daughters, Kay Mathers Wiechert of Columbus, Ohio and Dian (Robert) Robinson of Newark, Ohio; one son, Ron (Mary Ellen) Mathers of Newark; four grandchildren, Tim Wiechert, Vicki (Dave) Woods, Tina (Rod) Huhn and Teresa (Mike) Holman and nine great grandchildren, Timmy and Jennifer Wiechert, Matt, B. J. and Debbie Woods, Zach and Lindsey Huhn and Jason and Justin Holman. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Delsa Mathers, who died April 14, 1983; by his second wife, Sarah (Sally) Mathers, who died December 15, 2000 and a brother, Pat Mathers. Friends may call 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave. Zanesville and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at the Coburn United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2007 with the Rev. Doris Flynn officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park. LaFayette Masonic Lodge #79 F & AM will hold services at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Masonic Home in Springfield, Ohio.
