John O. Mattingly, 98, of Zanesville, died at 10:33 P.M. Sunday, June 19, 2016, at The Helen Purcell Home. He was born July 25, 1917, in Zanesville, a son of the late J. Clement and Olive Kerker Mattingly. He retired as the District Manager of The Ohio Department of Taxation, was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, and the Past Exulted Ruler of the Fraternal Order of the Elks Lodge # 114. Surviving are his sister Ernestine Dailey of Zanesville; four nieces, Margaret Ann Waltz of Columbus, Lynn (Ted) Burchfield of Southern Pines, NC, Barbara (Mike) Callahan of Zanesville and Suzy (Peter) Thompson of Princeton, NJ; local great nephews and great niece, Andy Hess, Ben Hess, Brandon Hess and Kelly Callahan; several other great nieces and nephews who live out of town; Godchildren, Mary Ann Ewart, Dennis Baughman and Denise Baughman, all of Zanesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret E. Peg Bratton Mattingly, who died March 12, 2007; and a brother, Robert K. (Bette) Mattingly. Friends and family may call from 6-8 P.M. Thursday, June 23, 2016, at BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE. A Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 24, 2016, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 144 North 5th Street, Zanesville, with a Dominican Father as Celebrant. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Peg, at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.
