John O. Montgomery

John O. Montgomery, 83, of Zanesville, completed his earthly journey on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. The son of Charles A. and Margaret Cline Montgomery, John was born January 14, 1931, in Fairfield County, Ohio. On September 25, 1953, he married Dorothy Mae Culbertson who survives. They were blessed with two daughters. Nancy Jane deceased in 1990. Susan and her husband, James McDonald, along with their sons Jack (8) and Eli (7) completed John's life on the Colonial Heights Farm. John graduated from Carroll High School in 1948, The Ohio State University in 1952 with a B.S. in Rural Sociology, and The University of Wisconsin School of Banking in 1971. He served as a 1st Lt. in the United States Air Force from 1953-1955. He worked for Citizens National Bank from 1955 until he retired in 1977 as Vice President of Real Estate. He was an active member of Ark Spring Baptist Church for over 60 years. Also surviving are a dear neighbor Pat Wheeler; a sister-in-law Janet Montgomery Queen; a special niece Cindy (Greg) Ford; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, F. Glenn and Bob. John served 61 years as advisor of the Muskingum County 4-H Junior Leadership Club. During college, he served four years on the staff of 4-H Camp Ohio. John was involved in many civic endeavors: East Muskingum Water Authority, the Wilds, Jaycees, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, Downtown Association, Zanes Trace Commemoration, Gideons, Ruritan, Farm Bureau, Grange, and the Hospice Follies. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 P.M. & 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, and one hour prior to the funeral. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 10, 2014, at Ark Spring Baptist Church, 8085 Big Muskie Drive, Chandlersville, Ohio 43727, with Pastor Paul Thomas and Pastor David Morrow officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Ark Spring Baptist Cemetery, with military honors being presented by VFW George Selsam Post #1058. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Muskingum County 4-H Endowment Fund (#605084) and mailed to: Ohio 4-H Foundation, c/o Kelly Zwink, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43210; or to the Ark Spring Baptist Church: listed above.
