John N. Pompei

John N. Pompei, 83, of Zanesville, died at 10:10 P.M. on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House surrounded by his loving family. John was born February 17, 1931, son of the late Samuel and Adalena Lippere Pompei, in Wheeling, West Virginia. He graduated from Wheeling High School, West Liberty College, and D.T. Watson Physical Therapy School which was affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. John came to Zanesville in 1958 to serve as Physical Therapist in the office of Dr.'s Lester Lasky and Melvin Krohn. He continued the position as director of the Physical Therapy department at what later became Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville, retiring in 1996 after nearly forty years of service. During that time, he also worked at Wilson School at the "Sunshine School" and did physical therapy at a number of the area's nursing homes. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He was a long time member of Zanesville Jaycees and was very active during the time the Jaycee Public Golf Course was built. During that period of time, he volunteered his time as "Athletic Trainer" for the Maysville High School football and basketball programs. As a result of this, he was inducted into the Maysville Hall of Fame in 2011. John was a former member of American Physical Therapy Association, a current member of Zanesville Country Club, and American Legion Post 29. He was a long time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. He is survived by his wife Janet Anderson Pompei; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linnie and Tom Gramlich of Pickerington, Laurie and Bob Miller of San Antonio, Texas, and Rae Ann Brown of Pickerington; and his son John P. Pompei of Zanesville. He was also very proud of his ten grandchildren, Kelly (Kris) Conover, Elise Gramlich, Matthew Gramlich and his fiancée Lindsay Pavell, Bryan Gramlich and his fiancée Lauren Shreve, Jesse, Zachary and Addie Miller, and Emma, Noah and Jonah Brown. He had one great granddaughter Allie Conover and Baby Conover to be born in March, 2014. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children Dorothy Jones Pompei who died in 1986; two brothers; and one sister. His hobbies were his family, reading, and he was a very avid golfer, having accomplished five holes in one. He attended Genesis Lifestyle and Fitness Center on a regular basis where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to John McIntire Library: 220 N 5th Street, Zanesville, Ohio 43701; St. Thomas Catholic Church: 144 N 5th Street, Zanesville, Ohio 43701; Genesis Hospice-Morrison House: 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701; or to the charity of one's choice. Friends and family may call from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 P.M. with a Vigil Service to be held at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, February 21, 2014, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 144 N 5th Street, Zanesville, with a Dominican Father as Celebrant. He will be laid to rest at Mount Olives Cemetery, Zanesville.
