Joseph Berman, 72, of Zanesville, died at 4:46 P.M. Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Genesis Hospice-Morrison House. He was born December 17, 1943 in Jackson, Mississippi, son of the late Dr. Louis and Mona Linden Berman. He was a member of the Beth Abraham Jewish Synagogue. He graduated from Salem College in Salem, West Virginia with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a sonar tech on one of the first nuclear submarines (The James Madison). He managed the family farm and held various jobs in construction and maintenance. Surviving is a sister, Joan Dutro; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Phyllis S. Berman, whom he married December 17, 1972, who died December 3, 2008; and brother, Michael Berman. Friends and family may call from 11:00 A.M. until time of service at noon on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE. Full military honors will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home with the United States Navy in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Lesion Post 29. Funeral services will be held at noon with Rabbi Jeffrey Elson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Beth Abraham Jewish Cemetery, Zanesville.
