Julia E. Stephenson, 96, of Zanesville died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at The Helen Purcell Home. She was born November 29, 1909 in Washington, Georgia, a daughter of the late James and Vira Dodds Stephenson. Julia was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, graduated from Lash High School, class of 1928, graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors Degree in Education and received a Masters Degree from The University of Denver. Julia taught Kindergarten to Native Americans through the W.P.A., Then taught Phys. Ed, History and Health for 32 years in the Zanesville City School System at Grover Cleveland and Hancock Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and of the Muskingum Retired Teacher's Association. She volunteered at Bethesda Hospital after retirement. Julia took a motorcycle trip outwest after graduating from College and had taken an extensive trip to Europe after her retirement. She enjoyed reading, Square Dancing and Folk Dancing and was an avid Ohio State sports fan. Best of all, she enjoyed her family. Surviving are five nieces; Nancy Fomenko, of San Jose, CA., Linda ( Richard) Calland of Zanesville, Roxann Fomenko of San Jose, CA., Sue Stephenson of Chicago, Ill., and Sarah Jane Hillyer of Boston, MA., a nephew, Greg ( Gloria) Stephenson and their children of Chicago, Ill., three great nephews and a great niece and a special friend, Glenna Simon of Zanesville. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Wesley and Lola Fomenko, three brothers, James, Erin, and Charles Stephenson, a niece, Jean Wallace and a nephew, Jimmy Dick Stephenson. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Virginia Ress officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ or to The Helen Purcell Home.
