L Idell Mccarty

ZANESVILLE - Laura "Idell" (Sweeney) McCarty, 97, died peacefully with family at her side on October 30, 2009 at Primrose Retirement Community in Zanesville. Born January 16, 1912 in Rehoboth, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Susie (VanSickle) Sweeney, also of Rehoboth. She was married to the late Charles J. McCarty (1970) on June 15, 1937 and they had one son, the late Patrick J. McCarty (2005), born March 28, 1939. Idell graduated from New Lexington High School in 1929 and Ohio University in Athens in 1933. She briefly taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Dixie, Ohio before eventually retiring from Good Samaritan Medical Center in 1977 where she served over 20 years, culminating as the Business Office Billing Supervisor. She was the eldest member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where she faithfully worshipped and volunteered for over 60 years. Idell was also a member of the Good Samaritan Charity Circle and the St. Thomas Quilters. In retirement she enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, and aquatic exercise. Her love of family and neighbor was second only to her love for God. In addition to her parents, husband, and son, Idell was preceded in death by sisters Violet, Cleo, and June Sweeney, Nellie (Sweeney) Carlow, and Catherine (Sweeney) Longstreth. She is survived by a sister, Anna Mae (Bill) Smith of Lancaster, Ohio; a grandson, Senior Master Sergeant (ret) Brian P. McCarty of Beavercreek, Ohio; a granddaughter, Kristin (Eric) Silverman of Flower Mound, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Maria C. McCarty and Emma Grace Silverman, and numerous nieces and nephews Calling hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville where Vigil Services will be held at 1:30p.m.. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2009 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 144 N. 5th Street, Zanesville, Oh with Fr. Luke Turon as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
