Lillian H. (Founds) Shaw

Lillian H. Founds Shaw died May 19th, 2015 at The Oaks at Bethesda. She was born February 25, 1924 in Youngstown the eldest child of the late Joie Emerson Founds and Elsie Ellen Barton. Lillian graduated from Chandlersville High School in 1942 as Salutarian and from the New England School of Broadcasting in the 1960s. During World War II she worked at Patterson Airfield lacing radio cables for B29 bombers. Following the war she worked at WHIZ Radio in Zanesville where she met her husband to be, Eugene "Gene" Allen Shaw. They married June 1, 1947 at the Chandlersville Methodist Church. Gene died in Zanesville in 2007. Lillian and Gene lived in many places over their 60 year marriage before retiring to Zanesville in the early 1980s. In Leominster, Massachusetts Lillian was active in the Red Cross and served as chairman of volunteers. Both Lillian and Gene were active in square dancing and locally were members of the Zanes & Janes Dance Club. Lillian also taught and called square and round dancing. She was active in amateur theater in Virginia and Zanesville. Like Gene, Lillian was a ham radio operator, holding the call sign W8LFG for over 50 years. Lillian is survived by two brothers, Emerson Founds of Zanesville and Garrett Founds (wife Betty Jane) of Lancaster, two sisters, Evelyn Gotschall of Somerset and Leah McCurdy of Zanesville, and sisters-in-law Rose Mary Founds of Somerset and Wanda Founds of Chandlersville. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Weldon Founds of Somerset and Virgil Founds of Chandlersville and by her brothers-in-law Jim Gotschall of Somerset and Bill McCurdy of Zanesville. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, especially Carol Dixon and Jon & Starla Founds who were particularly supportive. Lillian is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren: Helen A. Shaw, her husband William C. Chapman, and their sons William P. and Nathaniel E. Shaw-Chapman, all of Maine. Barbara Hanno, her husband Philip Hanno, her sons Andrew & Colin Bentley, her daughter Julie (Verseckes) Gagne (husband Dennis Gagne), and children Emily & James Ide and Ayvri & Korynn Gagne, all of Massachusetts. John A. Shaw, his wife Hollin, his son Christopher and their son William, all of Louisiana. She was pre-deceased by her grandson Matthew Verseckes. The family would like to thank the staff of Primrose Retirement Community and Linda Helser of Zanesville for their caring assistance for Mom over the years. Friends and family may call from 12:00 noon until the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, May 22, 2015, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with Rev. Tom England officiating. Lillian will be buried in Chandlersville Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Eugene Allen Shaw.
