Mary Nell (Showalters) Bowers

Mary Nell Showalters Bowers, 97, of Zanesville, died at 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Cedar Hill Care Center. She was born June 24, 1914 in Clarksburg, W.Va. to the late Louis and Virtue Baker Showalters. Mary worked as a secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Dayton, OH and retired from the John Wise Accounting Firm. She was a member of Central Trinity United Methodist Church, Muskingum Chapter #485 Eastern Star, Rosa Shrine #8, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Business and Professional Women, Blue Triangle Club, Salvation Army Aux. and the Senior Citizens Center Club #1. Mary graduated from Lash High School and Meredith Business College and attended the Miami Valley Conservatory of Music. She studied Art at Dayton, Ohio and various teachers at the Zanesville Art Center. Mary also exhibited in Dayton, Columbus and Zanesville. She was listed as a living American Artist in the Library of Congress (1985) under President Johnson. Surviving are a son, Phillip O. (Duetta Szabo) Bowers of Lillian, AL; a sister, Ethel (Sheldon) Hurley of Florida; two grandchildren, Robert J. Bowers and Tammy Louy; three great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Bowers; four sisters, Wilma Showalters, Blanche Wolf, Jean Shuey and Martha Davis. Friends and family may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2012 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville where the funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 with Rev. Tom England officiating. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband, Robert at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
