Mary Burns

Mary June (Hettich) Burns, 84, of Zanesville, died at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at her home with her son by her side. Mary was the 2nd daughter of the late Lewis and Mary (Kreitz) Hettich. She was born June 15, 1925, in Corning, Ohio. June and Gladys took dance lessons at The New Lexington Dance Academy as young girls and gave dance instructions many years. She worked at The Gem restaurant in downtown Corning, Ohio. Robert Burns frequented the Gem quite often and drank coffee to visit his favorite waitress, June. They dated for four years and were married on Saint Patrick's Day on March 17, 1951 in Canton, Ohio. They first lived in Cleveland, Ohio and made over twenty moves during their journey in life together. She devoted her life to raise Rollin in a kind, loving and giving manner. They had a wonderful parent to child relationship. Mary was a member of The Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, American Legion ladies auxiliary for 66 years and The Zanesville Chapter of The Genealogy Society. In 1975, her husband passed away and she moved one more time and lived the rest of her life with Rollin until she traveled to the city in the sky. She is survived by her son, Rollin Burns of the home; her sister's children, Shirley (Bill) Spicer, Jack (Neva) Decore, Susan Post and Sharon (Jim) Larkins; and her other nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Burns, who died August 1, 1975; and a sister, Gladys Decore. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 400 Pleasant Grove Road, Zanesville with Pastor Nathan Nordine officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Zanesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care, 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701-9836. A special thanks to the hospice team of Janelle, Jovita and Christine; the caregivers, Teresa Jesse, Beth Norman, Betty Wilkins, Jennifer Willis and friends and neighbors.
