Mary Miller Grant, fondly known by all as "Bebe", passed away at 8:23 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008. She was with family at her residence in Zanesville. "Bebe" was born November 23, 1929, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the daughter of John G. and Emily Hengstenburg Miller. Bebe lived and was educated in various mid-eastern cities, including Zanesville, Ohio. She was a graduate of Lash High School Class of 1948. She attended college at the Ohio University, Zanesville Branch and the University of Cincinnati where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She furthered her education at MATC where she studied Accounting. Her career included medical assisting at the Yale University Health Department, real estate sales, development and property management and homemaking. She was heavily involved in community, charity and volunteer organizations. Bebe was a Girl Scout leader and commissioner, a swimming and diving official, PTA member, Grant Hospital Shield I and the White Shrine in Upper Arlington. She was a member and deacon of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church and later member of the First Christian Church. She served the community as a member of the Zanesville Daybreak Rotary Club, past president and lifetime trustee of the Zanesville Art Center and was a member of the Genesis Foundation Board and recipient of the Genesis Foundation Community Service Award in 2005. She was also a director for the Zanesville Day Nursery, an honorary member of the All Around Club, member of the Beaux Arts Club, the Zanesville Yacht Club and the Zanesville Concert Association. Bebe's involvement as a Rotarian included co-development of a meaningful literacy project through the Muskingum County Library System. As a Board Member and volunteer at the Zanesville Day Nursery, she also filled a vital role as they implemented a pilot literacy project. Her involvement in these organizations helped address the literacy challenges of the community. Bebe had the inspiration and desire to bring the National Miracle League Program to this area after learning about the program at a District Rotary meeting in 2005. With her effort, along with club members, the Daybreak Rotary Club purchased the right to establish the Miracle League of Muskingum Valley, Ohio from the National Organization. Bebe married Frederic J. Grant III on August 26, 1950 and have two sons, Frederic IV and John Alexander and a daughter, Pam. She was a proud grandma of 3 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 2 great-grandsons and more to come. No calling hours will be observed. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary "Bebe" Grant will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the First Christian Church, 3000 Dresden Road, Zanesville with the Dr. Herbert Hicks officiating. Following the memorial service, a time of fellowship and refreshments will be had at the church for friends and relatives. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville are entrusted with all arrangements.
