Mary Elizabeth (Duvall) Thomas

Mary Duvall Thomas, 93 of Zanesville, died at 5:15 A.M., Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Helen Purcell Home. She was born June 29, 1921 in Zanesville. She was the daughter of the late Loren and Eva Duvall. She attended Zanesville High School, Ohio State University, Capital University and the University of Pittsburgh, studying music education. In addition to being a private music teacher, she was a church organist at several churches in the Zanesville area, retiring from First Christian Church where she also served on the Board of Elders. She served her community on the Zanesville City Council and was formerly Director of Volunteer Services at Good Samaritan Hospital. She served on numerous community boards and foundations, including the Ohio Arthritis Foundation, Red Cross, Muskingum County Mental Health Association, and the Heart Fund Sunday chairman. Mary was also a member of the First Baptist Church, Thursday Music Club, Zanesville Concert Association, and the Muskingum County Center for seniors, and the American Guild of Organists. Surviving are her step-children, Nancy Crawford, Robert Thomas and James Thomas, all of Texas; special friends, Mary and Herman (Doc) Krouskoupf and Irene Paxson all of Zanesville; and a niece Jeannie Murray of Caldwell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend James H. Thomas who died April 1, 2002. Friends and family may call one hour prior to funeral service which will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home 1271 Blue Ave. Zanesville, OH 43701 with Dr. Herbert R. Hicks officiating. She will be laid to rest at the Greenwood Cemetery.
