Opal O. Roberts

June 11, 1914 — February 14, 2009

Opal Odell Wallace Roberts, 94, of Zanesville, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009 at her residence. She was born June 11, 1914, in Morgan County, the daughter of the late Charles and Lavina Alexander Wallace. Opal graduated from Reed Elementary School in Bloom Township, Morgan County and after moving to Zanesville at the age of fifteen, attended Lash High School. Opal graduated from Lash High School Class of 1932. She attended Nurses training and graduated from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1935. Opal became a Registered Nurse and a Special Units Nurse and assisted with doctors at Good Samaritan until 1939. She has been a member of the Eastern Star Valley Chapter 19 in McConnelsville, Ohio since 1949 and has received her 50 year pin. She has been a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church on Pine St in Zanesville since 1951 and has received the Rose of Concern pin denoting her devotion to people and their spiritual and physical needs. Opal served for twenty years on the Alter Guild and served as Cub Scout Leader for ten years. She was a member of the evening circle at St. Luke and as of late, never missed a meeting. She was known for her love of church, family, friends and greeting card ministry. Surviving are four sons, Patrick (Julia) Roberts of McConnelsville, Richard (Diane) Roberts of Lewisburg, TN., Jeffrey (Doris) Roberts of New Lexington and Mark (Polly) Roberts of Fruita, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Howard (Red) Roberts whom she married in 1936; three sisters, Golda Fox Roberts, June Daily and Ethel Ward; and two brothers, Neil and Charles Wallace. Friends may call 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville and from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the St Luke Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brian George officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, Ohio, 43701 or to the St Luke Lutheran Church, 1330 Pine St., Zanesville, Ohio, 43701.
