Owen E. Dick

Owen E. Dick, of Zanesville, died at 2:15 p.m. November 9, 2006, after a short illness at Genesis Hospice, Morrison House, Zanesville, Ohio. He was born December 11, 1912, in Muskingum County, son of the late Laysel and Zetta (Hibbs) Dick. He attended Hopewell schools and graduated from Lash High School in 1932. Owen was employed at Armco Steel. In 1943 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy SEABEES serving in Algeria, North Africa as a carpenter's mate first class. He was honorably discharged in Oxnard, California in 1945. In 1946, with his wife, Mary Agnes (Combs) Dick, whom he married April 8, 1935, returned to California where he lived for 50 years. They lived in Southern California in the Redondo Beach area where he was a self-employed contractor. They became members of the Lutheran Church of Resurrection in Torrance, California. After his wife's death in 1996, he moved back to Zanesville. Owen's interest in art and love of music became his hobbies long with his 'wheels'. He helped the volunteers at Bethesda Hospital and enjoyed helping many friends with his talents. Surviving are two sisters, Evelyn Ankrum and Dorothy Schenk, both of Zanesville; sister-in-law Cora Dick of Dover, Ohio; brother-in-law, James (Becky) Shaw of Zanesville; five nieces, three nephews, cousins and a special relative, Connie Blight, of Deerfield, New Hampshire and the "Old Boys" of California. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Charlotte Shaw and three brothers, Frederick, Robert, and Gabriel. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. till service time Friday, November 17, 2006 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home with Chaplain Tim Patton officiating. In keeping with Owen's wishes he will be cremated. VFW George Selsam Post 1058 will hold full military rites at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Genesis Hospice - Morrison House, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701 or the charity of their choice.
