Richard A. Harmer, 83, of Zanesville, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Genesis Good Samaritan Emergency Room. He was born December 6, 1927, in Zanesville, a son of the late Lewis and Edna Brahler Harmer. He retired after 13 years of service as a maintenance repairman for Ohio University-Zanesville and was a member of the American Legion. Richard served his country in the Merchant Marines and was a World War II Navy Veteran. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Betty J. Holdcroft Harmer, whom he married February 13, 1947, of the home; two sons, Richard (Jill) Harmer of Baltimore, MD and Timothy Harmer of Zanesville; three grandchildren, Doug Harmer, Kelly (Alan) Denham and Scott Harmer; five great grandchildren; and two nieces, Ann Holdcroft and Cathy Smith, both of Zanesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Troy Harmer; and a sister, Ruth Ann Harmer Love. No calling hours will be observed. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Poplar Fork Cemetery, Gratiot with Rev. Reginald Martin officiating. The United States Navy in conjunction with VFW George Selsam Post #1058 will hold full military rites at the graveside.
