Roy E. Smith, 80, of Zanesville, died at 4:35 a.m. Thursday, September 24, 2009 at his residence. He was born October 1, 1928, in Muskingum County, a son of the late Ray and Bessie Gray Smith. He worked for 16 years as a salesman for Woodman Accident and Life Insurance Company and then retired after 20 years of service as a salesman for White Chevrolet. He was a member of the Coburn United Methodist Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was an avid card player, had an uncanny ability to work math problems, was a practical joker and loved his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty Elson Smith, whom he married October 1, 1949, of the home; a daughter, Christine (Craig) Perry of Richmond, VA.; two sons, Dan (Cindy) Smith of Zanesville and Mark (Diana) Smith of Pickerington; 9 grandchildren, Kevin (Joy) Chevalier, Heidi (Jason) Potocki, Scott Smith, Erica (Richard) Hicks, Erin Smith, Eric (Vanessa) Smith, Jonathan Smith, Dustin (Jacquelyn) Smith and Tyler Smith; 9 great grandchildren, Kylie, Seth, Dalton, Caleigh, Alivia, Hayden, Cole, Addison and Sophia; several nieces and nephews; and five special sister-in-laws. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Smith; his step father, Arthur Swartz; three brothers, George, Ned and Henry Smith; a grandson, Jason Chevalier; his beloved aunt, Dewey Grether and a friend, Midge Galliger. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 25, 2009 and from 10:00 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Coburn United Methodist Church, 3618 Maple Ave., Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the church with Rev. Doris Flynn officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville is entrusted with all arrangements.
